Description/Learning Outcomes:
An FHWA EDC-5 Webinar in collaboration with NLTAPA and the National Center for Rural Road Safety.
Rural roadway departures make up a third of U.S. traffic fatalities—about 30 people a day. Head-ons, rollovers and tree crashes account for over three-quarters of these fatalities. Curves are over-represented for all 3 of these crash types.
This webinar will focus on how several agencies are addressing curves within their jurisdictions by enhancing curves with signing and striping to reduce roadway departures.
State, local, and tribal stakeholders – come and learn how you can address curves to reduce rural roadway departures and save the people behind the numbers.
Speakers and Topics to be covered include:
- Pamela Blazo, Michigan DOT will present on Michigan’s Streamlined Systemic Application that was created to promote the installation of enhanced curve signing on the local roadway network. The presentation will highlight a few local agency projects recently implemented.
- Matt Mulder, Bonner County, Idaho will present on Bonner County’s effort to install edge lines and retroreflective delineators through curves on numerous roads as a project to address roadway departures.
- Paul Fontecchio, Brown County, Wisconsin will present on Brown County, Wisconsin’s safety improvements made on rural county highway curves as part of the County’s Road Safety Plan.
