Geometric Design
Transportation safety can be improved in a multitude of ways (engineering, education, enforcement, and EMS) including the geometric redesign of a road (engineering). Geometric design relates to the alignment, profile, and cross-section of a road, and changing one or more of these design elements is typically a high cost countermeasure. However, in some cases, geometric redesign projects are necessary. In a rural area, the terrain and weather conditions present additional challenges that can be addressed through geometric design.
This section will highlight rural geometric design guidance and examples.
