Highway-rail Grade Crossings
Highway-rail grade crossings are a specific type of highway intersection in which two modes of transportation (vehicular and rail) intersect. In rural areas, these crossings may only be indicated by a crossbuck (“X” shaped sign). In order to prevent collisions at these crossings, a number of warning devices can be implemented, including warning tones, pavement markings, signs, stop gates, and flashing lights.
This section provides resources for enhancing safety at highway-rail grade crossings in rural areas.
