An intersection is a location within a road where users (motorized and/or non-motorized) cross paths. Intersections are found on all road types and are locations with a high risk for safety challenges. In rural areas, intersection challenges may include lack of lighting, lack of signs marking the intersection, remote locations, and high speeds. Strategies for improving intersection safety typically include engineering (alternative designs and roundabouts), education, and enforcement (red light running).
