Systemic Safety
Systemic safety is a comprehensive approach to safety planning, often used for the implementation of low cost improvements. This approach looks at risk across an entire road system rather than only using traditional site analysis based on crash data. Therefore, countermeasures are implemented in multiple locations with similar characteristics. The systemic safety approach can be particularly beneficial in rural areas where crash data, used in traditional site analysis, can be sparse or incomplete.
This section provides resources for applying the systemic safety approach in a rural area.
