#RRSAW2024 Day 5: Positive Driving Behaviors

Humans make mistakes while navigating rural roadways. But those mistakes do not have to result in serious injury or death.

This principle comes from the Safe System Approach (SSA) and is the impetus for including driver behavior for Day 5 of the 2024 Rural Road Safety Awareness Week (RRSAW). The overall RRSAW theme is, “Life Between the Lines: Preventing Rural Roadway Departures.”

A driver makes hundreds of decisions simultaneously. They must control the vehicle, interact with other drivers and road users, navigate the roadways, and pay close attention to the overall functions and features of their vehicle—all while driving.

With all these decisions being made, drivers should not add distractions to the process. Using a cell phone, driving under influence of alcohol or any other substance, and driving while fatigued are examples of distracted driving behaviors that can result in a vehicle leaving its lane, which can result in a crash.

Long drives are a part of rural commutes. The commute must be a safe one. Everyone deserves to make it to their destination and making a mistake should not result in the loss of a life. By practicing good driving behaviors, we can keep vehicles in their lanes and save thousands of lives!

SeatBella

Zzzap! Good driver behavior is the only way SeatBella will allow drivers on the rural roadway. SeatBella is the champion of wearing seatbelts, keeping both hands on the wheel, getting rest before driving so there is no fatigue, driving safe speeds, and never being distracted when operating a vehicle.

Safe System Approach (SSA)

Another principle of the SSA is safety is a shared responsibility, which includes the SSA element of Safe Road Users. Driver behavior must prioritize safety, such as:

  • Always wear a seatbelt.
  • Never drive distracted, under the influence, or fatigued.
  • Always drive at safe speeds.

Countermeasures and actions to prevent roadway departures

  • Deploy high visibility enforcement campaigns.
  • Participate in safety awareness campaigns and educate road users about how they can improve safety.
  • Conduct internal training and policies on good driver behavior.
  • Maintain agency vehicles.
